A folklorist in mysterious Innsmouth, Part 2

I leave the Gilman Hotel, with a few hours to spare until low tide and access to some caves, acoording to Dr. Addison.

Addison specifically mentioned a book store, and it seems like the kind of place where a professor would go. It’s a nice, cozy bookstore – seems out of place for this run-down community. I browse the shelves a bit to feel the place out, and find an interesting volume on the history of Innsmouth. It seems that there was indeed a shipwreck, near Falcon Point, some time back. So that’s a clue if I ever find Addison. A second book also describes some of the rituals of the local church, who worship some sort of sea god named Dagon. How did THAT book find its way here?

I then have a brief chat with the book store owner, who insists that nobody has been in the store yet today – but saying that after describing Addison herself. That’s super suspicious, right? Then I’m kicked out of the store, and get +1 Doom. Hm, If I want to visit anywhere else, I’d better make it good.

The guy at the grocery store told me to steer clear of  the cannery. That in itself tells me that’s the sort of place one could keep an unwelcome stranger from out of town? So I take it on myself to sneak in. It goes smoothly; up and over a fence, pinch a crowbar from a storage room, then observe for a while. And there’s just nothing relevant here. Lots of stinky fish. Lots of cans and canning machines. No sign of anything suspicious, though. I give up on that and sneak out, and though I have a feeling that I’ve been seen, nobody confronts me on it.

It’s getting to be half past four, low tide. I make my way to the beach and into a grotto, and she was right. There is indeed a cave here. I take a lesson from my last life memories, and pick the other tunnel this time, landing me in a smuggler’s storage room. There are a few tools, and crates of moonshine – nice stuff, but nor what I’m hoping to find. But in the next room, I find Addison – tied and gagged. I untie her and we get the heck out of here. We see some folks in another cave headed our way, but manage to evade them and get back to the Gilman Hotel.

So, a short breath to decide what to do next. Clearly, regardless of shipwrecks and treasure, these Innsmouth folks are secretive and violent and we need to get out of here. So that’s what we do. But now things get weird. There’s a dense fog rolled in, even though it’s barely evening and not nearly cool enough for fog, and there are…animals of some sort in the dark, too. They have two arms and legs, but move and flop oddly, not like animals nor people. It’s quite creepy, honestly. And then they see us.

We’re swarmed by vague shapes in the darkness, and something clubs me in the head. I never wake up from that darkness. My adventure ends there.
