Alone Against the Frost

YOU become Professor Nadelmann, a young anthropologist mounting an expedition into the Northwest Territories of Canada in search of whatever is there. Few expeditions come this way, since the one where everybody was found dead minus their heads. But I’m sure you’ll be fine.

You, and three graduate students, and a very capable local guide, set out to see what there is to see. Maybe you’ll make contact with some natives? Maybe you’ll find a new species of animal or plant?

No, probably you’ll die, or get turned into a cryptid stalking the woods in search of meat. If you’re lucky, you’ll make your way back to Fort McDonald, the sole survivor. Maybe, just maybe, you won’t land in prison for getting four people killed.

Review and Opinion

It’s a really fun time, though I think far-fetched that you’ll get one of the good endings, where you find gold or find a rare flower specimen. I’m pretty sure that Bernard will always die on the first night of camping, just to set the horror tone, and Charlie always either leaves or died horribly. But, the story is engaging and I still don’t know how many endings there are. The bad endings are so gruesome that I love it – drowning, eaten by a variety of monstrous animals, or even turning into a cyptid haunting the woods for two-legged prey.

Hints and Tips

BACKWATER is when you find a flower thought to be extinct. You win this if you find the hidden valley (INCHCAPE) and then pass a hard Int roll or else a Botany roll.

BACKWATER is also when you find a living prongbuck (though to be extinct). You win this by surviving the wolves in the hidden valley (INCHCAPE).
